Hello, and welcome to another blog. Today we’re going to talk about the ECBA certification through the IIBA. The ECBA certification is the entry-level certification into business analysis, and it’s an excellent certification for those aspiring to become business analysts and those who have just recently gotten their first business analyst role. It tests you on the foundational knowledge of business analysis as described as part of the BABOK. I know that’s a lot of terms, so let’s break them down a bit before we jump into the ECBA exam.
Certifications
Many organizations put out certifications in business analysis, one prominent being the IIBA (The International Institute for Business Analysis). Now IIBA has several levels of certifications that you can get. Starting with the ECBA, the entry certificate for business analysis. So, that is the first certificate you can get, and then they have other ones that go up the chain as you have more direct business analysis experience. ECBA has no required hours working as a business analyst to be eligible to take it. Instead, they ask you to have 21 professional hours. It is shown that you’ve gone through and done your research and study to be able to pass the exam now.
Those 21 professional hours can be a combination of a lot of different things; it can mean everything from self-study through the web, through online courses, or anything of that nature as long as whatever you’re studying or whatever you are taking like the online course follows the standards of the BABOK. It’s a thick book that helps describe all of the standards for business analysis as described by the IIBA. ECBA certification is based on those standards, and again, as I mentioned earlier, the test or the exam is based more on the foundational concepts. It ensures you understand the terminology, techniques, and tools a business analyst uses to generate organisational value.
Getting Started
Here is the Entry Certificate into Business Analysis (ECBA) information. This is on the IIBA website. Getting started is where we want to focus. So, there are four key things that you need to do as part of the ECBA;
1. Ensure you register an account with IIBA
2. professional development hours, which we discussed earlier.
3. Agree with the Code of Conduct.
4. Agree with Terms and Conditions.

They have a little application now right here that will be saved as a draft on the website for you. So, you can start to fill out your professional development hours, putting in your details, and that way, if you have any questions or need to finalize or brush up on something before you take the exam. You can take any of our online courses to qualify for the 21 professional development hours.
My Thoughts
We’ve covered that and talked a little about the ECBA. Where you can find more information and where you can apply, let’s talk about some of my thoughts about the ECBA. ECBA is excellent for aspiring new business analysts. For sure, if you’re looking to get a certification or you’re looking to get a leg up over your competition, or you’re looking to prove to your future organization or yourself that you have a base understanding of the standards of business analysis, then ECBA is an excellent certification to go through. Some places are starting to release them, but the IIBA has made these exams available online, so you can take them entirely from your home as long as you meet the requirements. For completing the online exam, I think you need a webcam and microphone, and maybe some other stipulations you must have to do that.
Preparation
To prepare for the ECBA (Entry Certificate in Business Analysis) certification exam, you can follow these steps:
