What is HCIE Certification?
HCIE, or Huawei Certified Internetwork Expert, is a prestigious certification that validates a professional’s expertise in designing, building, and managing complex and large-scale enterprise networks. This certification holds immense value in the IT industry, and achieving it requires a comprehensive understanding of networking principles, protocols, and technologies.
What is tested on HCIE Datacom Lab v1.0 exam blueprints?
The Huawei Certified ICT Expert (HCIE) certification is the most advanced level of Huawei’s network technology certification. When someone says they are taking the HCIE exams, they usually refer to Datacom (formerly Routing & Switching), the most popular exam track in China and internationally. The HCIE datacom certification exam is quite intricate and comprehensive, covering various aspects such as:
Network Architecture Design and Planning
Network architecture design and planning are among the critical contents of the HCIE Datacom certification exam, including layering design of network structure, network topology planning, network performance and reliability design, network security, and QoS strategy design.
Huawei Routing and Switching Equipment Technology and Applications
The HCIE certification exam requires mastery of various technologies and applications of Huawei’s routing and switching gear, including routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, etc.), switching technologies (VLAN, QinQ, STP, RSTP, MSTP, etc.), MPLS, VPN, and IPv6.
Security and Protection
Security and protection are essential to the HCIE datacom certification exam, including network security strategy design, network security protection technology, network attacks, and prevention, network security incident handling, and other aspects.
Data Center Technology and Architecture Design
Data center technology and architecture design are also one of the focuses of the HCIE certification exam, including data center network architecture design, data center storage technology, virtualization technology, cloud computing technology, SDN, and NFV.
Other Technologies and Applications
In addition, the HCIE certification exam also includes other technologies and applications, such as video conferencing, voice communications, wireless networks, network optimization, performance debugging, and others.
Key Areas of Preparation
It is important to note that the above information is only a general guideline for HCIE certification exams. Candidates should select a learning path and method that is suitable for them based on their individual circumstances. This should include practical hands-on experience, field training, and a comprehensive understanding of the exam content and skills required. If you are interested in taking the HCIE certification exam, it is recommended that you focus on the following key areas:
Requirements of the Exam
To prepare for the HCIE certification exam, it is essential to first understand the exam requirements and content. You can refer to the official documents and free YouTube HCIA, HCIP, and HCIE training courses to clarify the skills and knowledge you need to master. This will help you to study and prepare for the exam in a targeted manner.
Study and Practice
To prepare for the HCIE exam, you have a couple of options. You can attend the HCIE Datacom lab boot camps offered by 591lab or use self-study materials to learn about Huawei’s routing and switching exam blueprint. Understanding network architecture design and planning, security, data center technology, and architecture design is also essential. In order to master the relevant technologies and enhance your practical ability, it’s recommended that you combine practical operational skills with constant training.
Prepare for The Exam

Malaysia HCIE Exam Center
I took my exam at the Huawei Authorized Learning Partner (HALP) INFOSYTE in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Upon arrival, I provided my local ID card and admission confirmation SMS message at the gate of the training center to complete the admission formalities. After that, I waited in the lounge area for the reception. The lab proctor usually guides the candidates into the examination room at around 8:30 in the morning.
Essential Guidelines at the Examination Room
Upon entering the examination room, the proctor thoroughly explains the exam policies and examination disciplines to all candidates. While taking the exam, candidates can bring their mouse, keyboard, water, and paper towels. However, other items are not allowed inside the exam room. Snacks and drinks will be provided in the examination room, but the lunch quality may not be up to the mark. It is recommended to have a full meal before entering the exam room in the morning.
Notes on Taking the Exam
Within half an hour after the exam starts, check whether each device and terminal can log in normally. The password is uniformly Huawei@123. Some devices use the factory password (which will be given in the exam), which needs to be changed to Huawei@123 in AAA. The initial password I encountered during the exam was email@example.com. After this point, any frustration caused by login issues will no longer be addressed. After ensuring the password is correct, check whether the device is provisioned correctly. I noticed an error in the configuration of the X_T2_AGG1 device on the X-campus. If the configuration is wrong, you can reset and re-configure the stack.
Examination time Allocation
In the morning, I oversaw operations at Y-Park, capturing over two hundred screenshots with FastStone Capture to illustrate each step. While navigating iMaster NCE Campus, I efficiently utilized idle periods to configure the X-campus. Post Y-Park tasks, I successfully completed the final segment of X-Park before taking a lunch break.
Question Topics Screenshot Verification
When taking screenshots during the exam, adhere to the question requirements and save them in the HCIE-Datacom folder on the exam computer’s desktop. The HCIE-Datacom folder contains four subfolders—X campus, Y campus, backbone network, and automation—which serve as storage for the screenshots. Ensure that the save path in FastStone Capture corresponds to the specific area when capturing screenshots in different sections.
Pay close attention to where the questions specify the need for screenshots. Typically, a screenshot of the verification result is required at the end of each question for every site. Backbone questions, with four sub-sections, also necessitate taking screenshots to verify results at the questions’ conclusion. Careful reading of the questions is crucial, as overlooking the screenshot requirement, even with correct overall configuration, may result in point deductions. Having the necessary screenshots is essential for scoring, emphasizing the importance of thorough question comprehension.
Good luck to all the students reading this who will pass the HCIE Datacom exam on their first attempt!
I was fortunate to pass the screenshot verification during the lab practical without encountering any issues. However, I noticed that I was slower and less tolerant of errors, particularly for those taking the lab for the first time. It takes time to become familiar with the exam room environment, adjust to using the keypad and mouse, and deal with considerable psychological pressure. For your regular practice sessions at 591Lab, keeping the total operational time under 4.5 hours is recommended, allowing sufficient time for taking screenshots, troubleshooting, and saving configurations.
