Fortinet NSE Certification Updates and Transition Explained

Fortinet NSE Certification Updates

As of October 1, 2023, the Fortinet NSE certification programs NSE5, NSE6, and NSE7 have officially changed. Before, anyone holding existing certificates was considered valid for two years. Your certifications might have been moved to the new system automatically. In the old system, there were eight levels. NSE 1 and NSE 2 were primarily sales-focused trainings. NSE 3 was pre-sales training. Moreover, NSE 4 was an entry-level single exam, but NSE 5 was a little more specialized and covered multiple topics.

To obtain an NSE 6, you needed to take various exams on multiple topics. To get a complete certification, you must pass four technical exams, such as ADC, FortiWeb, and FortiMail. Before, NSE 7 required just one exam. The specializations it required were Enterprise Firewall, SD-WAN, operational technology, public cloud, and analytics. NSE 8 was for experts. You must pass two separate exams, written and practical. It was similar to the CCIE level if you are familiar with Cisco.

After updates, the certification roadmap is a bit different now. The Fortinet NSE Certification levels 1 and 2 now fall under the Fortinet Certified Fundamentals (FCF) category. And NSE 3 did not directly convert to the Fortinet Certified Associate (FCA) level. However, some topics from NSE 3, NSE 5, NSE 6, and NSE 7, might still be helpful for the new exams. The next level up is the Fortinet Certified Professional (FCP), which focuses on:

  • Network Security
  • Public Cloud Security
  • Security Operations

Fortinet Certified Professional (FCP)

Now, let’s look at the requirements for each of these badges. It would help if you took multiple exams to obtain the badges.

If we look at Fortinet Certified Professional, the first is Network Security. This is the one most people usually have.
